3 Secret Powers of a Wedding Planner

Wedding planning isn’t for the faint of heart. To be a wedding planner, you have to be strong but gentle at the same time. You must know how to work with people, keep things organized, bring people’s visions to life, and leap tall buildings. Okay, not that last one – at least not yet!

I don’t mean to toot my own horn here, but planners are kind of like superheroes. Aside from all of the well-known things we do to make a couple’s wedding day successful, we also have some “secret” powers that we put into play to make things happen.

These are the things most people don’t think about, but they’re beneficial in many ways.

Here are a few secret powers great wedding planners have and how they help you.

Secret Power #1: We Act on Your Behalf

A wedding planner can provide peace of mind by offering connection and communication.

Let’s say you book a band (which is no small chunk of change) and then hear nothing but crickets for several months. You send out several emails and make calls but can’t get anyone to get back to you. What are you supposed to do? Your wedding is only a few months out, and you have questions.

This is where a planner can act as a buffer and a go-between. Because I have professional connections with vendors, I’m more likely able to reach them and get the information you need. Plus, once I have the information, I can keep all the details organized for you. And in one place! So you don’t have to worry about keeping track of each vendor. You just have to connect with me.

Secret Power #2: We Sweat the Small Stuff

I recently had a wedding where the bride’s father had passed away a couple of years before, and this was the first major life event since his passing.

Since the bride wasn’t going to get to do the first dance with her father, the mother-of-the-bride wanted to do something special to surprise her daughter in honor of her dad.

So the bride’s brothers, the DJ, and I worked to put together something really beautiful, heartfelt, and joyful.

This was a delicate moment and situation, but as the planner, I sweat the small stuff, hammered out the details, and worked with many different people to ensure everyone was on the same page. And I do that for each and every one of my clients so they can be truly present and not worry about what’s happening and who’s where. That’s my job.

Secret Power #3: We Manage People

Half of planning a wedding is managing family and emotions. Wedding days are overwhelming, no matter how close to perfect your family may be. And for most of us, our families aren’t nearly perfect! And that’s okay.

At some point during the day, you may say, “I love my family, but I need 10 minutes to myself.”

And that’s why I’m there. I’m great at creating distractions and communicating with people. I can soften the blow by letting your mom know you need to take five. Or give your overbearing bridesmaid a gentle heads up that she’s crossing the line.

This doesn’t mean that your day has to be filled with drama or bad blood for me to step in and save the day. The most perfect family can still be overwhelming. So having someone on your side who can be a calming presence can be invaluable.

There is a lot of emotional work that goes into planning that we don’t talk about as planners. Just as there is a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that you as the couple won’t likely see. We handle the j-o-b details so you can have fun on the journey. And totally enjoy the result!

If you could use some of these powers to plan your wedding, let me know. I’d be happy to share them!
